Affiliate Marketing Terms/Dictionary

A lot of terms used online can be foreign to a person who’s not that computer literate. Especially some words used in the online marketing industry. Here you can find an easy to understand definition of what some of these words and terms mean.

  1. Ad– An advertisement for a product or service. Usually in picture, video or text form.
  2. Affiliate Program– Also called associate programs are arrangements between you and a company, person or brand name entity. These companies will pay you a set commission for referring someone to their site. They will also pay you if a person performs  an action or purchases something on their site.
  3. B2B– A business that sells products or provides services to other businesses.
  4. Blog– A frequent publication of personal thoughts & web links.
  5. Campaign– This is the product you decide to promote and the way in which you choose to advertise it.
  6. CPC– Cost Per Click. This is a form of advertising where you pay a certain amount of money every time someone clicks on an advertisement you may have.
  7. Commission– A form of payment for someones services or efforts.
  8. Description Tag– These are phrases or keywords used to find a website or webpage.
  9. Domain Name– This is a website address.
  10. E-Commerce– Any type of business or commercial transaction that involves the transfer of information on the internet.
  11. EPC– Expected number of clicks.
  12. Freemium– A technique where a business offers a free basic product, giving them an option for the advanced product for a cost.
  13. Frames– A structure that allows for the dividing of a web page into two or more parts.
  14. Guest Blogging– Writing a blog post to be published on another blog as a temporary featured author.
  15. Gravity– A term used on click bank that tells affiliates if a product is selling or not. They say the higher the gravity on a product, the higher the sell rate.
  16. HTML-Hyper Text Markup Language. Elements that are the building blocks of all websites.
  17. Headline– Is the text at the top of an article, blog or website indicating the nature of the content.
  18. Impression– A single instance an ad is displayed on Google.
  19. Incentivized Traffic– When a person receives compensation for visiting a website.
  20. Keyword– A word or phrase used when you search something online.
  21. Keyword Research– Searching for words that are commonly used when searching for something.
  22. Link Tab– Creating a link to a different website from a word or phrase.
  23. Link Cloaking– To hide the true destination of a hyperlink
  24. Marketing– Many actions & strategies used in selling a product or service.
  25. Meta Tags– Tags or keywords that help make up part of the content of a particular site.
  26. Niche– A specialized market or activity a person might be best fitted for.
  27. Network– A medium used to transport data and information to others.
  28. Optimize– To make as effective, perfect or useful as possible. To write or rewrite to maximize efficiency and results.
  29. Outsource– To assign a task or duty to someone else and pay them for their efforts at a discounted rate.
  30. Publisher–  Can also be known as an affiliate. One who promotes & advertises goods & services for some form of compensation.
  31. Portal–  A site featuring a variety of commonly used services serving as a starting point and frequent gateway to the web or a site.
  32. Reciprocal links–  Links between two sites, where site owners agree to exchange links.
  33. RSS–  Really Simple Syndication. This is a method of informing people of new post or news feeds as they get created. People subscribe to rss feeds for current information.
  34. SEO–  Search Engine Optimization. Choosing targeted keywords & phrases related to a website or blog to ensure either rank high in search engines.
  35. Split Testing–  The process of doing experiments for different strategies used to sell products and determining which is most productive.
  36. Text Ad–  A way of advertising that includes words & numbers to hyperlink to another location.
  37. Title Tag–  Used by many search engines to find the location of websites or webpages.
  38. URL–  A location of something on the internet.
  39. Viral Marketing–  Marketing that encourages people to pass along a marketing message.
  40. Vlog–  A blog that contains video content.
  41. Web Browser–  An application that allows a person to search the internet.
  42. Web Master–  An individual or group responsible for a website or the website owner.
